How to Stop Getting Denied for a Bank Account

If you’ve been denied when trying to open a bank account, you’re not alone. Banks use consumer reporting agencies like ChexSystems and Early Warning Services to screen applicants. Negative marks on these reports—such as unpaid fees or suspicious activity—can lead to automatic rejections.

Step-by-Step: Get Approved for a Bank Account

Step 1: Request Your Banking Reports

Before you can fix the problem, you need to know what’s on your file.

1. ChexSystems Report

ChexSystems keeps records of issues with past bank accounts, like overdrafts, unpaid balances, or account closures.

How to Get It:

  • Online: Create a portal and request your report.
  • Mail: You can also request a copy by mail.
  • Cost: Free once per year under federal law.

2. Early Warning Services (EWS) Report

EWS is owned by major banks and tracks fraud-related activity, unpaid fees, and account abuse.

How to Get It:

  • Email: Send a request to EWS at consumerinquiry@earlywarning.com
  • Include your full name, address, Social Security number, and a copy of a government-issued ID.
  • Cost: Free report annually.

Step 2: Review Your Reports for Errors or Negative Marks

Once you receive your reports:

  • Look for unpaid fees, closed accounts, or fraud flags.
  • Check for errors or outdated information (most negative marks drop off after 5 years).

Step 3: Dispute Inaccuracies

If you find incorrect information:

  • File a dispute directly with ChexSystems or EWS.
  • Provide documentation to support your claim.
  • Investigations typically take 30 days.

Step 4: Pay Off Any Outstanding Balances

If the reports show you owe money to a previous bank:

  • Contact that institution and settle the debt.
  • Ask for a letter of payment confirmation.

Step 5: Apply with Second-Chance Banks or Credit Unions

Some banks offer accounts specifically for people working to rebuild their banking history.

  • These are called second-chance checking accounts.
  • After a period of responsible use, you can upgrade to a regular checking account.
